There is typically a mediation orientation date set ahead of the meeting which prepares parties for the actual mediation. Some counties also require each party to complete a parent education class. Mediation may be waived in certain circumstances, including when domestic violence has been involved or when one party lives 50 miles away. The time frames for permanent custody may vary greatly county to county, but we usually tell people 8-12 months in Mecklenburg county and 4-6 months in smaller counties.
